What it's like
so.sauna is a horsebox sauna in the Secret Garden at Hangleton Manor, a pub in Hangleton Valley Drive, Hove. You get there by walking through the pub car park and the main pub garden, then through the door next to the dovecote. The venue calls it the Secret Garden; customer reviews on its site describe it as walled, with mature trees.
Inside, the horsebox holds six people in community sessions and seven if you book it privately. The venue doesn't say what fuels the stove, and it doesn't publish a temperature. It does say the heat changes with how many people are in there, and that you should ask others before putting water on the stones.
Cooling off happens outside: a cold plunge bath, an outdoor cold shower and some chairs. There's no mention of a changing room. Belongings go in communal waterproof tubs, with a sauna host on site.
Sessions come in 55 and 30 minute versions, and each exists as a normal community session and a silent one for anyone who wants sauna without sound. The venue suggests five to fifteen minutes in the heat, then a break outside. Toilets are the pub's, so only when the pub is open.

First time here
- Book online on Acuity. The venue recommends it, but also takes walk-ins: check availability when you arrive, and you can pay in cash.
- Check the days: Monday and Wednesday 5.30 to 8.30pm, Friday 11am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm, Sunday 10am to 5pm, with Saturday given over to events.
- Getting there: bus 47 stops close by on Hangleton Lane, and the 5B and 3X stop at Towns Corner, five minutes' walk. Portslade station is 25 minutes on foot. Adjacent streets have unlimited free parking, so don't block residents' driveways. The what3words address is mini.power.remain.
- Arrive ten minutes early to change. A late arrival can't extend the slot.
- Bring swimwear (required in community sessions), flip-flops or sliders (the ground isn't suitable for bare feet), two towels (100% cotton is preferred), warm layers and a full water bottle.
- Take your jewellery off, sit on a towel and go barefoot inside the sauna. Don't drink alcohol before, during or after.
- If you're coming in the morning, go to the toilet first, because the pub toilets are only available in pub opening hours.
Good to know
- Toilet hours conflict on the venue's FAQ page. One line says the pub toilets are available 11am to 11pm and another says 12 noon to 11pm. Assume noon if you're cutting it fine.
- Friday hours conflict too. The website says 11am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm, while an Instagram graphic from 17 September gave morning sessions 10am to 1pm.
- Accessibility: there's step-free access into the manor, car park and gardens, but the ground is shingle, grass and uneven. The sauna is up a shallow ramp with no handrail, and the hosts will help if you tell them on arrival.
- Children must be 10 or over, with one adult per child. The venue doesn't advise children to use the cold water.
- Refunds: full refund at 48 hours or more, 50% or a reschedule at 24 to 48 hours, nothing under 24 hours.
- The home page testimonials mention the venue's "new location", so it seems to have moved. Use the Hangleton Manor address on the venue's own site.

A 55 minute community session is £16 and a 30 minute express session is £8, per person. Silent sessions cost the same. Private hire is £40 for 30 minutes, £80 for 55 minutes and £160 for 110 minutes, for up to seven people.
Is there a discount for regular visitors?
Yes. A pack of 10 community sessions of 55 minutes is £120 and a pack of 5 is £70, both valid for six months. Gift vouchers are also sold.
Can you swim in the sea at so.sauna?
No. The site is in Hangleton, and the cold options are an outdoor cold shower and a cold plunge bath. The venue doesn't mention the sea.
