How we check prices and facts

The short version

Every price and fact is copied from the venue's own website or booking page, tied to the exact sentence it came from, checked by code against a saved copy of that page, and re-read every month. Today that is 1,062 facts from 207 pages across 31 venues.

Where the information comes from

We find venues from maps, web search, gym and spa chains and the local council's planning register, where new saunas show up first. Then we read each venue's own website, booking system and social account. Those are the only sources for prices, hours, rules and facilities.

For Brighton & Hove that means 207 venue pages, each saved with the date it was fetched. We do not take prices from review sites, aggregator listings or other directories.

How a fact gets onto a page

  1. It is copied from the venue's page together with the exact sentence it appears in, the page address and the date it was read.
  2. Code confirms that sentence really is on the saved copy of that page. A fact whose quote cannot be found is rejected, not rounded.
  3. Prices, lengths of time and capacities are stored as numbers and checked against allowed values. A write-up cannot mention a price, a duration or a day that is not in the recorded facts.
  4. A venue is only published if it passes the publish gate: it is open or announced with evidence, and every fact that rests on an image has been reviewed by a person.
  5. After the site is built, a final check re-reads every £ amount and length of time on each venue page and in its structured data, and fails the build if any of them is not in the venue's record.

How fresh it is

Dates are shown, not implied.

Every fact has its own check date. The date printed as "oldest price checked" is the oldest of them on that page, because a page is only as current as its stalest price. Across the whole site the oldest check is 6 Oct 2026.

We go round every venue again each month. A fact older than 45 days is flagged for re-reading, and an offer with an end date is removed from the pages once that date has passed. Each month we also draw a random sample of facts and re-read them by hand against the live pages, so mistakes the automatic checks cannot see are counted.

Numbers we work out

A few figures are calculated rather than quoted, and are labelled as such: the price per minute (price divided by the session length), the median price on the price index, and walking times from a station, which come from OpenStreetMap routing. A calculated figure is never shown without the numbers it came from.

The "from" price on each venue is the cheapest standard shared session, so one price means the same thing everywhere. Silent early-birds, women-only slots, events, treatments and private hire do not set it, though they stay on the page.

Photos

Photos are small copies taken from the venue's own website, credited to the venue and linked back. A venue can send better ones, or ask us to take any photo down, and we remove it within 48 hours.

What can still be wrong

Venues change prices, hours and rules without telling anyone. A price can change the day after we read it, which is why the check date is on every page and why every venue page links to the venue's own booking page for the final word. Some venues publish no prices at all; we say so rather than guess.

The live sea temperature on the sea guide and the region page comes from Open-Meteo and is a model reading for the coast, not a measurement at a particular beach (the privacy page says what that request sends). Spotted a mistake? See the corrections policy or write to us.

Asked a lot

How often are prices re-checked?

Every venue is re-read monthly. Each fact carries the date it was last checked, and the oldest of those dates is printed on every page, so a page is only ever as fresh as its stalest price.

What if a venue changes its price between checks?

The page will be out of date until the next check or until someone tells us. That is why the check date is on every page and why every venue page links to the venue's own booking page. If you spot one, tell us on the contact page.

Do you test the saunas yourselves?

No. Everything on a venue page is taken from the venue's own published pages, each fact with a link to where it was found, and we do not claim a visit unless a page says so.

Why does a venue say price not published?

Because the venue's own website or booking page does not show one. We do not estimate, and we do not fill gaps from third-party listings.
