What it's like

Sauna in the Lanes is in a courtyard just off Middle Street, at 67 Middle Street. The venue says it is "sheltered from the elements" and a short walk from the beach. It's run by Simon and Bridgett Ane (BA) Goddard, who also run Yoga in the Lanes.

The cabin is a Nordic-style wooden sauna built by the Brighton firm Wildhut, with a thermally treated alder interior. It holds up to ten people. The stove is an Estonian Huum with stones, and you ladle water on for löyly. No temperature is published.

Cooling off is outdoors: a cold plunge pool and an outdoor cold shower, both included in every session. There's no sea dip on offer, since the beach is only a walk away rather than part of the set-up.

Sessions are 30 minutes and start on the hour and half hour. The venue builds in changing time between slots, so if you want longer you book back-to-back sessions. The changing room is gender-neutral and up a floor, directly above the sauna. Water is filtered and free, but there's no cafe.

Who it's for

People who want sauna fitted around a working day, one 30 minute slot at a time. Regulars, since the bundles and memberships bring the price down. Groups of up to ten, with private hire for stag and hen dos, team events and wellness events. Adults only.

First time here

  1. Book through Bookeo on the venue's website. The venue recommends booking ahead for evenings and weekends, though walk-ins are welcome when there's space.
  2. Check the hours: Tuesday and Thursday 5 to 8pm, Friday to Sunday 10am to 1pm, closed Monday and Wednesday.
  3. Find the courtyard just off Middle Street, at 67 Middle Street, BN1 1AL. There's no on-site parking and limited street parking. The nearest car parks are Churchill Square, NCP Russell Street and The Lanes car park on Black Lion Street.
  4. Arrive five to ten minutes early to check in and change. Use the shoe racks in the covered vestibule outside the cabin.
  5. Bring swimwear (compulsory) and two towels. Hire is £2 a towel. Lockers need a £1 coin deposit, and there are open cubbies too.
  6. Sit on a towel in the sauna. Chatting is fine if you keep it quiet. No phones inside, and no alcohol anywhere at the centre.
  7. Between rounds, use the cold plunge or the outdoor shower. Drink water, and leave the cabin when you need to.

Good to know

  • The website disagrees with its own booking platform on prices. The FAQ says a five-session bundle is £49 and the Middle Street membership gives 8 sessions; Bookeo shows 5 sessions for £34, 10 for £59 and a £64 membership with 12 sessions a month. The FAQ also calls bundle sessions 45 minutes, when sessions are 30. Trust the live booking page.
  • The Bookeo price list didn't load when this page was checked, so the £8 figure comes from the venue's FAQ. Any peak or longer-session pricing is unconfirmed.
  • Memberships: All Access is £75 a month for unlimited sessions, and Middle St is £64 a month. Both renew automatically until you cancel and include a free guest pass monthly.
  • Nobody under 18 is allowed in the sauna, for insurance reasons.
  • Accessibility isn't published. The changing room is on the first floor, so ask before you book.
  • Swimwear is mandatory and sessions are mixed unless an event says otherwise. Full refund with 72 hours' notice, credit with 24 hours.
