What it's like

Beach Box sits on the pebbles at Banjo Groyne on Madeira Drive, at the bottom of Dukes Mound behind the Volks Railway workshop. The site is open all year and says it is "steps away from the shore for a sea dip".

There are four saunas, all wood-fired. Lotta is the biggest, a nine-seat cedar cabin built by Wildhut, with high and low benches and a sea-facing window. Löyly is an eight-seat Finnish-style sauna. Leil is a converted horsebox that the venue says was originally built for the Albion football team, and it seats six. Drift is a private Lithuanian-style pirtis for up to three people, with its own indoor rest room.

For cooling off you get a chilled steel tub, a cool plunge pool and a slipper bath, all included in the ticket. There are also cold showers and a bucket shower, and the sea itself. Temperatures for the saunas and the water aren't published.

Express sessions are 45 minutes and the venue tries to rotate people between the saunas, keeping one as a quiet space. There's a fire pit and outdoor seating, and you can refill a water bottle on site.

Who it's for

People who want a proper sea-and-sauna session and don't mind a bit of admin first. Shared 45 minute slots start at £12.50 off-peak, and the silent early-bird 30 minute slot is £9.

The events calendar is wide: queer and FLINTA sessions, a Sunday silent reflection, sober sessions, German-style Aufguss nights. Families can only come in a privately hired sauna.

First time here

  1. Create a Bookeo account and book on the venue's site. Everything, including memberships, goes through Bookeo, and the venue's FAQ says you need to log in to book.
  2. Check whether your slot is peak or off-peak. Off-peak is Sunday after 5pm, Monday to Thursday and Friday before 5pm. Peak is Friday after 5pm, all Saturday, Sunday before 5pm and bank holidays.
  3. Find the site: Banjo Groyne, 285 Madeira Drive, BN2 1EN, at the bottom of Dukes Mound behind the Volks Railway workshop. You can walk down the steps from Marine Parade. The what3words address is bunch.firmly.dish.
  4. Arrive showered, because the showers on site are cold and for rinsing only. Changing space is limited at busy times, so come in easy clothes, ideally ready to sauna.
  5. Bring swimwear, two towels (one to sit on, one to dry off), sea shoes or flip flops ("ESSENTIAL", the pebbles are sharp) and a water bottle. A towel can be hired for £2. Don't bring your own oils or products.
  6. In shared sessions everyone covers up below the waist at all times; tops are optional. Underwear and daywear aren't allowed in the saunas. Alcohol is banned outright.
  7. Small lockers for wallets and phones are available if you ask at reception.

Good to know

  • Cancellation: 72 hours' notice for a full refund, 48 hours for a credit, nothing inside 48 hours. An optional £1.50 booking protection fee gets you a credit if you cancel later than that, as long as it is at least two hours before the slot.
  • The site has moved. The meta description still mentions the Sea Lanes development, but the contact page says the new site is a short walk from the old one, past Yellowave and Jungle Rumble Crazy Golf. Directories listing the Sea Lanes address are out of date.
  • The venue says there are four saunas, but the clothing-optional event runs "across all 3 saunas", because Drift is private hire only. The home page says Drift is for two people and the saunas page says up to three.
  • Under-16s: children aged 6 to 15 can use a privately hired sauna with an adult (one adult to two children), but they can't join shared sessions and aren't allowed in the cold plunge pools.
  • Step-free access isn't published. It's a pebble beach, so ask the venue before you book.
  • It stays open in rain, sleet and snow, but closes for strong gusts and electrical storms, with no refund if they judge it safe to open.
